The doctor told me that the majors wife who was very young and whine he had not married until he was definetly invalided out of the war had died of pneumonia she had been sick only a few days. None expected her to die.

The mood of this excerpt is grief and sadness. Much like most of Hemingway's works, the pain and sadness of this generation. We can see this in evidence of the "very young" wife who passed away. This invokes a feeling of loss that has been taken too early. Furthermore, she had "only been sick a few days. None expected her to die". In addition to her youth, it increases the tragic feelings of a loss too early.
