If the same index fossils were found in two separate rock layers, it would indicate that the rock layers were formed at the same time so the rock layers can be directly correlated even if geographically distant from one another. This is the principle that the great geologist William 'Strate' Smith worked out in his surveying of canals in England in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
