A common breathing condition that affects babies is RDS. RDS most frequently affects newborns who are delivered earlier than expected, typically before 28 weeks of pregnancy. Full-term babies can occasionally experience RDS.
RDS-affected babies typically survive. After returning home, these infants could require more medical attention. Some infants experience side effects from RDS or its treatment, such as the emergence of bronchopulmonary dysplasia, a different lung disorder.
RDS symptoms include:
- Shallow, rapid breathing
- Grunting
- Each breath causes the nostrils to flare, and a baby's skin and lips have a bluish tint.
- breathing causes the muscles between the ribcage to pull inward
