imagine you are pushing a wall and neither you nor the wall is moving also imagine you run and bump into the wall and push as hard as you can but it still does not move and now imagine a giant stone block on the ground and you try to lift it, kick it and push it but it does not move so that means that in both situations the objects are at rest. Secondly I would think is there a force that is equal to the force am using to push the wall but in the opposite direction working against my motion and all objects have matter so possibly a force within them. That is my understanding of it and hope it works out for you. Thanks!
Inertia is the tendency of all objects to resist any change in motion. Inertia causes a moving object to stay in motion at the same velocity (speed and direction) unless a force acts on it to change its speed or direction. It also causes an object at rest to stay at rest.
