Native American Involvement. The Iroquois of New York were allies of the British. During 1777 and 1778, they waged a bloody attack against the relatively undefended pioneers on the western frontier in New York and Pennsylvania. Washington responded by sending an army to attack Iroquois villages. The destruction of their homes and crops caused many of the Native Americans to starve.
