The major downfall of the Articles of Confederation was simply weakness. The federal government, under the Articles, was too weak to enforce their laws and therefore had no power. The Continental Congress had borrowed money to fight the Revolutionary War and could not repay their debts.

Strengths: the only strength I could find of a weak central government is that people wouldn't have to pay taxes so you would probably not have a revolution in your hands.  

Weaknesses: without a strong central government, the states would act like several small trees instead of a giant tree with lots of branches. Another weakness is that it will take a very long time for the states to agree on something, but if the states had a powerful central government like communism, the decision would be quick and powerful. Oh, and also another thing, if the congress asks people to give them money instead of taxing them, people would probably not raise enough money back then.
