There were many facts about slavery in the South but one thing that was not true about that was that Poor whites wanted to abolish slavery because they didn't benefit from the institution.

When it came to slavery in the South:

  • Southerners claimed it was fairer than labor in the North
  • Yeomen farmers supported it
  • Slaveowners were actually a minority in the South

Even though poor whites did not own slaves, they defended slavery with great vigor because it meant that there were people beneath them who they could mistreat and look down on.

In conclusion, it is not true that poor whites were against slavery.
