If the right triangle shown, AC= BC and AB=4, how long are each of the legs

Answer:

In a right angle triangle ABC, at C = 90 degree as shown below

AC =BC and AB = 4 units

Let AC=BC= x units

Using Pythagoras theorem:

[tex]AB^2 =AC^2+BC^2[/tex]

then substitute the given values we get;

[tex]4^2 = 2x^2[/tex]

or

[tex]16 = 2x^2[/tex]

Divide both sides by 2 we get;

[tex]8 = x^2[/tex]

Simplify:

[tex]x= \sqrt{8} =2\sqrt{2} \text{units}[/tex]

Therefore, each of the legs would be [tex]AC = \sqrt{8} =2\sqrt{2} \text{units}[/tex] and  [tex]BC = \sqrt{8} =2\sqrt{2} \text{units}[/tex]
